Boost Biomes is using the powerful social networks among microbes to provide novel, sustainable solutions to feed and heal people everywhere. Boost’s core technology is a proprietary discovery platform that uses high throughput sequencing, selective enrichment and advanced bioinformatics to identify microbial products with important commercial roles. Boost is uniquely positioned at the leading edge of a quickly expanding field looking to tap into the value offered by understanding and engineering microbiomes. Our technology differentiator is the development of a causal understanding of microbial interactions powerful enough to allow the rational construction of designer functional consortia.
Our first products seek to reduce the enormous waste in agricultural products due to crop loss to fungal pests in the field and post-harvest. There is significant need for new biological, organic, safe biopesticides for crops; current chemical products have many challenges, such as regulatory burden for growers and safety concerns of consumers. The company operates in South San Francisco, the heart of west coast biotech. Boost has a deeply experienced founding team, and licensed IP protecting the platform.
Boost is looking for an outstanding candidate able to bring their experience in the automation of liquid handling in the context of molecular microbiology. You will be responsible for onboarding and managing Boost Biomes’ automation platform – integral to our discovery pipeline – to enable high throughput microbial cultivation, DNA sequencing library preparation, and product assay development. You will have the opportunity to implement new and innovative methods for increasing efficiency, including by scoping new cutting-edge instrumentation and technologies. You will be the primary person responsible for scripting, validating, and executing high throughout SOP workflows. You will be responsible for overseeing sample, inventory and results tracking integration with our LIMS system, and will inform future LIMS and API function development. You will work with multiple stakeholders with competing needs in order to prioritize sample processing and will track our operations status through development of KPI dashboards. You will be the automation expert at the company.
Collectively, the person in this role will enable Boost to fully realize the potential of its Interactome Discovery Platform and transition it from concept to product pipeline with efficient, high throughput analysis enabling clear decision-making.
You are an automation expert with deep knowledge of microbiology, molecular biology, and high throughput operations. You are someone who can demonstrate knowledge of specialized scientific techniques relative to areas of expertise and can coordinate research activities with peers and supervisors. You are excited by the opportunity to develop SOPs and integrate a platform into a research workflow as part of a small team. You enjoy mentoring and training junior staff. You are experienced in the use of liquid handling systems for molecular microbiology, particularly NGS workflows and are ready to take on a leadership role. You are familiar with available automation tools.
You are someone who can communicate effectively through listening, documentation, and presentation and has a broad understanding of instrumentation and scientific principles. You are comfortable providing oral and written reports to audiences of varying expertise and background. Meticulous tracking is second nature. You enjoy running a service platform, interacting with stakeholders and prioritizing requests.

-2 years liquid handler experience, preferably across multiple platforms
-Experience with 96-head/span-8 liquid handlers, grippers, hotels, etc.
-Experience managing at least one direct report
-Able to script, execute and optimize complex automation workflow SOPs
-Experience with 96-well plate microbial cultivation experiments
-Experience with the automation of NGS sequencing protocols
-Experience with LIMS and inventory management software a plus
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Able to prioritize and execute tasks on timelines in an agile environment
-Commitment to self-development and learning new tools and skills
-Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Ecology, Mechanical Engineering or related field with one or more years of relevant experience
-Experience working in an industry setting preferable
